If you stand to close to friendly melee units or bellow them (melee on a hill) you might get no kills. If you stand right behind enemy units and fire you get most kills. Test some in costum battles. They usually turn every fight round and quicken it considerably. Never noticed any problems in that regard, even without flanking them, as long as they are protected (which can he tricky). Only swap them out earlier if you fight a heavily armoured faction like Lizardmen. Bring a unit of flamethrowers, they can decide battles in the right circumstances.
