WebMay 11, 2024 · A former arson investigator for the Charlotte Fire Department was awarded $1.4 million today in a whistleblower lawsuit against the City of Charlotte. Crystal Eschert, a former arson investigator for the city was fired after she voiced safety concerns over a new fire department building. Eschert was arrested in January on five counts of risk of injury to a child, all felonies, and two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, both misdemeanors, according to a police department press release issued at the time. Court records suggest offense dates in 2016, 2024, and 2024 for Eschert’s alleged conduct.
