WebThe mine started in 1878, and closed in 1927 after the shaft collapsed, although a newspaper article was found stating men were working underground in the mine during the 1929 Murchison earthquake. It has one of the deepest shafts on the Reefton field at 692 metres deep. The museum building is a former Methodist/Wesleyan church, which was built from pit-sawn timber in 1876 and led as a non-denominational church by a Methodist minister. The chuch formerly overlooked the town, but 1912 it was moved back and rotated 90° on its section. As the population of Blacks Point declined, worship shifted to Reefton, and the church closed in 1960.
